Pile bores are rarely ideal cylinders, and irregularities can affect capacity and design. Additionally, they should be evaluated for verticality to check if the eccentricity of the bore bottom centre compared to the top centre is within the allowable limit.
SHAPE device better characterizes the three-dimensional shape of drilled shafts, bored piles, and other excavated deep foundation elements. It provides a fast, economical visual representation of the foundation verticality prior to placing concrete in wet or dry excavations. The results of SHAPE measurement provide more details compared to other sonic caliper tools.
The SHAPE device can be attached to the Kelly bar or used with a top-mount winch system and lowered into the pile bore at an advancement rate of 300mm/s. The ultrasonic waves are sent, and the time taken for the waves to hit the bore surface and return to the device is measured. The data acquisition is done at approximately one (1) scan per second.
The data acquired is analysed further to determine 360-degree 2D and 3D profiles and the eccentricity.
